Best Manhunt Seeds — Mountains, Village and Portal
By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026
A manhunt seed is not a speedrun seed. In a speedrun the only opponent is the clock, so the best world puts the stronghold close and the terrain out of the way. In a manhunt the runner has hunters a few seconds behind, and what saves them is a place to break line of sight: ridges, cliffs, cave mouths and drops the hunters have to think about. The seeds below pair that terrain with the two structures a runner wants early, a village and a ruined portal, both near spawn.

What the manhunt filter looks for
Every seed in the list passes four checks on the Java 1.21 world generation. A village and a ruined portal each sit within 300 blocks of spawn. Inside the 1,024-block square around spawn that we sample, at least 12 peaks rise above Y 100, and the highest one reaches Y 177 or more. Both terrain numbers sit at roughly the top 5 % of our scanned worlds. The list is sorted by the number of peaks, so the most mountainous worlds come first.
Why mountains help the runner
Flat ground is the hunters' best friend: they see the runner from far away and sprint straight at them. Mountains break that. A ridge between runner and hunters hides the runner, a cliff turns a chase into a choice between a long way round and a risky drop, and a water bucket lets the runner take the drop safely. Mountain biomes add more: goats that can knock a careless player off a ledge, powder snow on snowy slopes that swallows anyone without leather boots, and caves that open under the peaks. Emerald ore only generates in mountain biomes, and iron ore is plentiful high up, so the runner can gear up on the way.
Early loot: village and ruined portal
The village gives the runner beds, food, hay bales and, with luck, a blacksmith chest with iron. The ruined portal is the escape hatch: its chest often holds gold gear, flint and steel or a fire charge, and sometimes obsidian, and its frame may already be partly complete. Getting into the Nether first is one of the strongest moves a runner has, because the hunters then have to follow through the same portal. With both structures within 300 blocks, neither side spends the first minutes wandering.
Is a manhunt seed fair for the hunters?
The hunters spawn in the same place and see the same village and portal, so the seed favours nobody at the start. What the terrain changes is the middle of the game: a runner who reads the mountains well can stay hidden longer, while hunters who split up can cut off ridges and valleys. If your group finds the runner wins too often, pick a seed further down the list, where the terrain is still rugged but has fewer peaks.
How many hunters can a seed handle?
There is no fixed number. One or two hunters chasing through mountains often lose sight of the runner, so rugged seeds suit small hunter groups well. With three or more hunters, cover matters less, because the hunters can spread out and watch several exits at once. Many groups give the hunters a tracking compass, which points at the runner and makes hiding harder no matter how many peaks the seed has.
Do these seeds work on 26.1 and Bedrock?
Yes on Java 26.1: it uses the same world generation as Java 1.21, so the village, the ruined portal and the mountains are where this list says. On Bedrock the biomes and terrain match Java, but villages and ruined portals are placed differently, so the same seed gives a different start. For Bedrock, use the Bedrock mountain seeds list for the terrain or the Bedrock speedrun seeds list for a village and a portal near spawn.
Do I need a datapack or plugin?
For the classic tracking compass on Java, yes. A vanilla compass points to the world spawn or to a lodestone, not to a player, so manhunt groups use a server plugin or a datapack that makes the compass follow the runner. The seed does not depend on it: the village, the portal and the mountains are part of the world generation, with or without a plugin. Without one, the hunters simply have to track the runner by sight and sound.
