What is a slime chunk?
Slimes spawn naturally below Y=40 only inside slime chunks, which make up roughly one chunk in ten. They drop slimeballs — needed for sticky pistons, leads and magma cream — so a slime chunk near your base is the fastest route to an automated slimeball supply. A chunk is a 16x16 block column, so block 0 to 15 is chunk 0 and block -1 is chunk -1.
Slime chunks on Java vs Bedrock
On Java Edition, slime chunks are determined by your world seed, so every world has them in different places — enter your seed to see yours. On Bedrock Edition, slime chunks are seed-independent: the same chunk coordinates are slime chunks in every Bedrock world, so you do not need your seed at all. A Java slime map will give a Bedrock player the wrong answer, which is the most common mistake with slime finders.
Building a slime farm
A slime farm needs a flat, spawn-proofed area below Y=40 inside a slime chunk. Clusters of adjacent slime chunks are far more productive than a single chunk, because a larger contiguous floor spawns more slimes per cycle. The map highlights the largest cluster on screen. To start a fresh world with a dense cluster near spawn, the seed search can filter for eight or more connected slime chunks.
