Minecraft Mineshaft Finder
By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026
Quick answer: To find a mineshaft, enter your Java world seed on this page: the map marks every chunk a mineshaft starts in, and the Find form next to it jumps to the nearest one with its coordinates. For example, Java seed 42 has a mineshaft starting in chunk 4, 0, at 72, 8, about 70 blocks from 0, 0. Link straight to a result with /mineshaft-finder?seed=YOUR_SEED.
Abandoned mineshafts are the long wooden tunnel networks under the Overworld, with rails, support beams, chest minecarts and cave spider nests. This finder works out where each one starts from your seed, entirely in your browser, so your seed is never sent to a server. It is made for Java Edition: the chunks are checked against the cubiomes reference code, and Bedrock places mineshafts differently.
What can you find in a mineshaft?
Mineshafts are worth a trip early in a world. Chest minecarts sit along the corridors and can hold name tags, enchanted books, golden apples (sometimes an enchanted one), iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamonds, rails and melon or pumpkin seeds. The rails and wooden planks themselves are free building material, and the tunnels cut through ore-rich stone, so they make a fast branch mine. Watch for cobweb clusters: they hide cave spider spawners, whose poison bite is dangerous before you have armour.
Where do mineshafts spawn?
On Java, the game rolls a chance for every chunk: about 1 chunk in 250 (0.4 %) starts a mineshaft, and almost any Overworld biome can hold one, so most seeds have several within 500 blocks of spawn. The marker shows the chunk the mineshaft starts in; the central dirt room sits there and the corridors branch out from it, often 50 blocks or more in every direction and through many neighbouring chunks. In badlands the game builds the mesa kind from dark oak, high enough that its corridors often break out into the open hillsides.
How do I get into a mineshaft?
Mineshafts sit underground, most of them below sea level, so walk to the marked chunk and dig down in a staircase, never straight down, until you hit planks, rails or fences; a cave or ravine that crosses the tunnels is a quicker way in. Bring torches to mark the way back, because the corridors branch and cross each other, plus shears or a sword to clear the cobwebs. The Find form copies a /tp command for the chunk centre that keeps your height (~), so you land on the surface above the shaft, not inside the stone.
Does the mineshaft finder work for Bedrock?
This finder is made for Java Edition. Mineshafts generate in both editions, but Bedrock rolls them with its own random number generator, so the same seed puts them in other chunks. The Java chunks match the cubiomes reference code on our fixture seeds. The Bedrock side of this finder is not checked yet, so on Bedrock use the map only as a hint and confirm the tunnels in game.
