Minecraft Geode Finder
By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026
Quick answer: To find an amethyst geode, enter your Java world seed on this page: the map marks every geode in view, and the Find form next to it jumps to the nearest one with its X, Y and Z. For example, Java seed 42 has a geode at -25, 3, about 25 blocks from 0, 0, at Y -32. Link straight to a result with /geode-finder?seed=YOUR_SEED.
Amethyst geodes are round shells of smooth basalt and calcite buried in the stone, lined inside with amethyst and budding amethyst. This finder works out where each one sits from your seed, depth included, entirely in your browser, so your seed is never sent to a server. It is made for Java Edition: the positions are checked against the cubiomes reference code and a vanilla server, and Bedrock places geodes differently.
What is amethyst used for?
Amethyst shards craft a spyglass (with copper), tinted glass that blocks light but not the view, and the calibrated sculk sensor. Since the armour trims update they also trim armour, and a clean set of amethyst blocks makes a bright decorative room. Shards come from fully grown amethyst clusters, which drop four each with any pickaxe and more with Fortune. Budding amethyst can’t be picked up even with Silk Touch, so a farm has to stay inside the geode where you found it.
Where do geodes spawn?
On Java 1.18 and newer, the game rolls once for every chunk: about 1 chunk in 24 holds a geode, at a random spot inside the chunk and a random height from Y -58 to Y 30, in any Overworld biome. That makes them common: a seed has dozens within 500 blocks of spawn. The marker is the geode’s position from that roll, and the Find form names its Y, so you know how deep to dig. Rarely a cave or an aquifer cuts through the spot, and the game then skips that geode, so check the next one if the stone is empty.
How do I farm amethyst from a geode?
Dig down to the marked Y in a staircase and listen for the chime of amethyst; the smooth basalt shell is a clear sign you are close. Break into the hollow, mine the clusters that have fully grown and leave every budding amethyst block in place: buds keep growing on its open faces. Clear the stone or water from those faces so buds can grow on them, light the room against mobs and come back now and then to harvest. The Find form copies a /tp that keeps your height (~), so you arrive above the geode, not inside the stone.
Does the geode finder work for Bedrock?
This finder is made for Java Edition. Geodes generate in both editions, but Bedrock rolls them with its own random number generator, so the same seed hides its geodes in other places. Our Java geodes match the cubiomes reference code on our fixture seeds and the geode shells a vanilla 1.21.4 server builds. The Bedrock side of this finder is not checked yet, so on Bedrock use the map only as a hint and confirm a geode in game.
