How to Find an End City in Minecraft
By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026
End cities are the only place to find an elytra. They also hold the best loot in the End: diamond gear, enchanted armor and shulker shells for shulker boxes. You can't stumble into one, though. They only generate on the outer End islands, which you can reach only after beating the Ender Dragon and travelling through an End gateway. The outer islands start about 1,000 blocks from the main island, so without coordinates you can spend a long time pearling across the void. This guide covers where End cities generate and how to get their exact coordinates from your world seed with the free ChunkScan finder. It also covers the in-game ways to locate them and what to bring so the trip doesn't end in the void.

Where End cities generate
End cities generate only in the End, on the outer islands (the end_highlands biome). None generate on the central island where you fight the dragon. The outer islands start roughly 1,000 blocks from the origin. Cities are placed on a regular grid, so there are usually several within a few hundred blocks of each other once you're out there. A city needs a high enough patch of island to spawn, so some grid spots stay empty. Some cities come with an End ship floating beside them. The ship is the important part: its back room has an item frame holding an elytra, plus a dragon head on the bow. Cities without a ship still have chests, but no elytra.
Using the End City Finder
Open chunkscan.com/end-city-finder and enter your world seed. You can see it in-game with /seed, or on the world settings screen in Bedrock. Pick Java or Bedrock, because structure placement differs between the two editions. The map marks End city positions around the outer islands, and hovering over or tapping a marker shows its X and Z coordinates. Note the city nearest to where your gateway drops you, not the one nearest 0,0. To share a result or come back to it later, link it as chunkscan.com/end-city-finder?seed=YOUR_SEED, with your own seed in place of YOUR_SEED. Seeds can be negative and up to 19 digits long, so copy the whole number, including the minus sign.
How our scanner checks End cities
ChunkScan computes structure positions directly from the seed with Cubiomes, a library that reproduces Minecraft's world generation. For End cities this means two checks: the game's placement grid for that seed, and whether the End terrain at that spot can hold a city. That's why some candidate grid spots get dropped. Our scans search the End at least 1,200 blocks from the origin, because nothing generates closer than the outer islands. The database has over 1.7 million scanned seeds, and every result comes from the same generation code the game uses. Nobody placed the markers by hand. Bedrock database scans skip End cities for now. Use the finder map with your own seed for Bedrock worlds.
Seed -3395932094831639731: a fast route to the End
Before you can reach any End city, you have to reach the End itself, and that means blaze rods from a Nether fortress. In seed -3395932094831639731 (Java, stony shore spawn), the scan puts a fortress 162 blocks from spawn, at Nether coordinates 32, 176. Trial chambers sit 16 blocks from spawn at 32, 144, which is useful for early loot. A bastion at 256, -272 (382 blocks) can provide ender pearls through piglin bartering. Blaze rods and pearls are the two ingredients for eyes of ender. Having both sources this close cuts down the prep for the dragon fight, and with it the time until your first gateway trip.
Seed -8643289387799938684: three fortresses near spawn
Seed -8643289387799938684 (Java, jungle spawn) has three Nether fortresses within 224 blocks of spawn: 32, -176 (178 blocks), 224, 0 (222 blocks) and -192, -112 (224 blocks). If one fortress has few blaze spawners in reach, another is close by. Above ground, a village 173 blocks out at 112, -144 lets you trade with clerics for ender pearls, and an ancient city sits 236 blocks away at 128, 208. Neither seed on this list is ranked by End city distance. They're examples of worlds where getting ready for the End is quick. Put either seed into the End City Finder to see its End city layout.
Finding End cities in-game
No explorer map exists for End cities. Cartographers don't sell one. With cheats enabled, or in creative, stand in the End and run /locate structure minecraft:end_city in Java, or /locate structure end_city in Bedrock. Without commands, kill the dragon. That spawns an End gateway at the edge of the main island, and each later dragon kill adds another, up to 20. Throw an ender pearl into the gateway's beam to reach the outer islands. From there, look for tall purpur towers. End rods on their roofs and walls help you spot them from far away. The finder's coordinates save you this scouting.
What to bring
Bring two stacks of building blocks to bridge between islands, at least 16 ender pearls, and a pickaxe. Shulkers fire bullets that cause levitation. Drinking milk removes the effect, and potions of slow falling or Feather Falling boots stop the fall from killing you. Carry a bow or crossbow for shulkers you can't reach easily, plus food and a bed or respawn plan, since death in the void loses your items. Wear a carved pumpkin or avoid eye contact with Endermen. Bring a few empty inventory slots for shulker shells and the elytra. Mark the gateway's coordinates so you can get home.
Frequently asked questions
Can End cities generate near the main End island?
No. End cities only generate on the outer islands, which start roughly 1,000 blocks from the origin. You have to defeat the Ender Dragon and travel through an End gateway, or bridge a very long way, to reach them.
Does every End city have an elytra?
No. The elytra is in an item frame on the End ship, and only some End cities generate with a ship. If the city you found has no ship floating beside it, check nearby cities on the finder map.
Do End city locations differ between Java and Bedrock?
Yes. The same seed number places structures differently in Java and Bedrock, so always choose the correct edition in the finder before reading coordinates off the map. The wrong edition will point you to empty islands.
