Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026

Quick answer: To link a Nether portal, divide the Overworld X and Z of your portal by 8 and round down, keep Y, and build the Nether portal there; multiply Nether X and Z by 8 for the way back. Example: an Overworld portal at X -250, Y 64, Z 1033 links to a Nether portal at X -32, Y 64, Z 129. Link straight to a result with /nether-portal-calculator?x=-250&y=64&z=1033.

Enter the X, Y and Z of one portal and this calculator shows where to build the other one, in the Overworld or the Nether. It rounds the way the game does, works the same on Java and Bedrock, and needs no seed. You can paste the F3 coordinates line straight into the X box.

How do Nether portal coordinates work?

The Nether is scaled 1 to 8 against the Overworld on the X and Z axes: one block walked in the Nether moves you eight blocks in the Overworld. To find where a portal leads, divide its Overworld X and Z by 8 for the Nether, or multiply Nether X and Z by 8 for the Overworld. Y is not scaled. The game rounds down, so Overworld X -1 is Nether X -1, not 0; this calculator rounds the same way, which is where hand conversions usually go wrong.

How do I link two Nether portals?

Build your Overworld portal first and stand in it. Enter its X, Y and Z here (press F3 on Java, or turn on Show coordinates on Bedrock) and build the Nether portal at the result. When you step through, the game looks for an existing portal near the converted spot: within about 128 blocks in the Overworld and 16 blocks in the Nether on Java. If no portal is in range it builds a new one, which is why an unlinked portal sometimes drops you somewhere unexpected.

Why does my portal go to the wrong place?

The game links to the nearest portal in range, not to the one you meant. On Java, two Overworld portals less than about 128 blocks apart can lead to the same Nether portal, and a Nether portal can send you to any Overworld portal within 128 blocks of its converted spot. Build each portal at its exact converted position and keep portals that should stay separate well apart. In the Nether, stay below the bedrock roof at Y 127.

Is the calculator the same on Java and Bedrock?

Yes. Both editions use the same 8 to 1 scale and round down, so the coordinates are identical. The search range for an existing portal differs a little between editions, so on Bedrock build the second portal on the exact converted spot to be safe. Nothing here needs your seed: the math is the same in every world.
