Minecraft Stronghold Triangulation

By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026

Quick answer: To triangulate a stronghold, throw an eye of ender, note X, Z and the F3 facing angle, walk a few hundred blocks sideways and throw again; the lines cross at the stronghold. Example: X 0, Z 0 facing -54.5 and X 300, Z 0 facing -47.7 meet at X 1388, Z 990 (Nether X 173, Z 123). Link a result with /stronghold-triangulation?x1=0&z1=0&f1=-54.5&x2=300&z2=0&f2=-47.7.

Enter where you stood and which way the eye of ender flew for two throws, and this calculator shows where the two lines cross: the stronghold. It also gives the Nether coordinates for the trip and the stronghold ring the result falls in. It needs no seed; add your Java seed to snap to the real stronghold. On Java you can paste the F3 + C line into a throw to fill it.

How does stronghold triangulation work?

A thrown eye of ender flies a short way towards the nearest stronghold and then drops or breaks. One throw gives you a direction, not a distance. Throw a second eye from a spot a few hundred blocks to the side, and the two directions cross at the stronghold. This page draws both lines from your X, Z and facing angle and gives you the crossing point, its Nether coordinates and how far away it is.

How do I read the facing angle?

On Java, stand where the eye flew, look straight at it and press F3. The Facing line shows two numbers in brackets: the first is the horizontal angle (yaw) this tool needs. Pressing F3 + C copies a command with your X, Y, Z, yaw and pitch; paste it into any box of a throw to fill all three at once. Bedrock shows no facing angle, so on Bedrock use the seed locator on the stronghold finder instead: it needs only your world seed.

How far apart should my throws be?

The further apart, the better. Two throws from almost the same spot give two nearly parallel lines, and a tenth of a degree of error then moves the crossing by hundreds of blocks. Walk at least 200 blocks at a right angle to the first direction before the second throw. Once you arrive, dig down and throw one more eye: when it flies downwards you are standing above the stronghold.

What does the seed box do?

Angles are never exact, so the crossing can be off by a few dozen blocks. If you know your Java world seed, type it into the seed box: the page looks up that seed's strongholds within 1,500 blocks of the estimate and shows the nearest one with its exact X and Z, and Copy /tp then goes there. The seed stays in your browser. Bedrock places strongholds its own way, so the snap is Java only.

Which stronghold does the eye point to?

The nearest one. Java worlds have 128 strongholds in eight rings around X 0, Z 0; the first ring holds three of them, 1,280 to 2,816 blocks from the origin. The result shows which ring the estimate falls in. If it lands between two rings, one of the facing angles is probably off. Speedrunners travel there through the Nether: build a portal, walk to the Nether coordinates shown and go back through.
