Minecraft Ravine Finder

By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026

Quick answer: To find the nearest ravine, type your seed and the X and Z you stand at: the list gives each ravine's start, length, heading and far end. Example: Java seed 5664688123390682476 from 0, 0 lists first a ravine starting at 42, 20, 1, 92 blocks long, heading south. Link a seed with /ravine-finder?seed=YOUR_SEED.

How ravines generate

A ravine is a carver, cut into the ground after the terrain is built, like caves. About one chunk in a hundred starts one. From its start block, somewhere between Y 10 and Y 67, it walks 84 to 112 blocks in one direction, bending a little left or right and up or down as it goes. It is narrow at both ends and widest in the middle, up to about 15 blocks across, and several times as deep as it is wide. Every Overworld biome can have them, and two ravines can cross.

How to use it

Type your seed (run /seed in chat, or copy it from the world settings) and, if you like, the X and Z you are standing at (F3 shows them). The table lists the ten ravine starts closest to that spot. Copy /tp puts a command on your clipboard that teleports you to the start, inside the ravine. Heads is the direction the ravine starts out in, and Ends near is where its walk stops, so you can follow it from one end to the other. Open on the seed map shows the ravine as a line on the map, centred on its start.

Versions and editions

On Java Edition 1.18 and newer the starts, lengths, headings and far ends are worked out in your browser from the seed with the same maths the game uses; we checked the starts against another seed map for one seed. On Bedrock Edition 1.21.60 and newer the page lists the start block and its width roll (0 to 6, the bigger the wider), which match another seed map for two seeds; Bedrock's heading and length were never checked, so they are left out. Older worlds (Java 1.17 and before, Bedrock before 1.21.60) place ravines differently and aren't covered. Only the open ravine is shown: aquifers can fill the bottom with water or lava, and caves or the surface can cut into it.

What Y level are ravines at?

A ravine's centre line starts between Y 10 and Y 67 and drifts only a few blocks up or down along its walk, so the table's Y is close to the middle of the cut for its whole length. The floor lies below that and the top above it, because a ravine is several times as deep as it is wide. Since 1.18 the deeper ones reach below Y 0 into deepslate, where diamond and redstone ore can show on the walls.

Are ravines good for mining?

Yes. A ravine is a long open cut through stone, so coal, iron, copper and gold on its walls show without any digging, and the walls give you dozens of blocks of rock face from top to bottom. Light the floor first: the dark parts spawn mobs. For whole iron and copper veins, which are much bigger than the ore blobs on a ravine's walls, use the ore vein finder.

Why can't I see a ravine at the listed spot?

Check the seed, the edition and the version first: the list is for Java 1.18 and newer and Bedrock 1.21.60 and newer. A ravine under the sea floor or one that crosses an aquifer is filled with water, and one that starts deep under a hill can be closed at the top, so it is still there under the surface. Teleport to the start with Copy /tp to look from inside.
