Minecraft Ruined Portal Finder
By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026
Quick answer: To find a ruined portal, enter your world seed on this page and choose Java or Bedrock: the map marks every ruined portal in reach with its coordinates. Ruined portals are common, so most seeds have one within a few hundred blocks of spawn. Link straight to a result with /ruined-portal-finder?seed=YOUR_SEED.
A ruined portal is a broken Nether portal frame with a loot chest beside it. Finish the frame and you reach the Nether without mining obsidian. This finder maps ruined portals for any seed, entirely in your browser, so your seed is never sent to a server. Positions differ between Java and Bedrock for the same seed, so pick your edition first.

Why find a ruined portal?
A ruined portal gets you into the Nether early: most of the frame is already there, so you only need a few obsidian blocks and a flint and steel instead of a diamond pickaxe. The chest next to it holds gold gear, obsidian and sometimes flint and steel or a fire charge. That is why speedrunners look for one near spawn.
Where do ruined portals spawn?
Ruined portals generate in almost every Overworld biome: on the surface, half buried, under water or high in the mountains, with a desert, jungle, swamp or ocean look to match. They are common, so most seeds have one within a few hundred blocks of spawn. Some are buried, so dig a little if you don't see the frame.
How do I repair a ruined portal?
Count the missing blocks: a full frame is 10 obsidian without the corners. Crying obsidian in the frame does not work, so replace it with normal obsidian. Without a diamond pickaxe, pour lava into each gap and water over it to cast obsidian in place, then light the frame.
Are ruined portals the same on Java and Bedrock?
Ruined portals generate in both editions, but the same seed places them differently on Java and Bedrock, so choose your edition above before you travel. The frame and the loot chest work the same on both platforms.
