Dramatic Cliff Coast Seeds for Scenic Bases
By the ChunkScan Team · Updated October 2026
A base on a cliff above the sea gives you a long view, a natural wall on one side and fast water travel on the other. Since the 1.18 terrain update, mountains can rise straight out of the coastline, and stony shores can drop dozens of blocks to the waterline. Most seeds still spawn you on flat ground far from any coast. We scanned over 1.7 million seeds, and only 20 matched the filters for this topic. The seeds below are the best of those matches. Each one lists its spawn biome and the structures within reach, so you can choose a coastline that also has useful loot nearby.

Distances in blocks from spawn
What makes a good cliff coast
Height comes from mountain biomes: jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks, snowy slopes and groves. Where one of these meets the ocean, the game often places a stony shore biome instead of sand, which gives you bare rock faces instead of a gentle beach. Sea level is Y 63, so a peak reaching Y 150 or higher right next to the water gives you a drop of more than 80 blocks. Look for a flat ledge partway up the slope. A ledge is easier to build on than a summit and keeps the ocean in view. Ocean ruins and shipwrecks near spawn are a quick sign that deep water is close.
How our scanner checks terrain
Every seed goes through the Cubiomes world-generation library. We sample a 32 by 32 biome grid at 32-block steps, which covers 512 blocks in every direction from spawn. The ingestion service then works out biome regions and terrain metrics from that grid, so a seed only qualifies when mountain and ocean areas both appear close to spawn. We also locate structures within 1,024 blocks of spawn, using real placement rules, so the ocean ruins and shipwrecks listed here are actual generated positions, not estimates. The distances in this guide are measured from spawn, and the X and Z values are world coordinates.
Mountain spawns with water in reach
Seed -9221387964992923016 spawns you in jagged peaks, the steepest biome in the game. A ruined portal sits at 96, 96, 135 blocks from spawn, and trail ruins are at 144, 16. Seed -9221042168759561694 starts on snowy slopes and has a shipwreck at -128, -128, only 181 blocks away. That puts a coast within sight of your starting mountain. It also has two villages, at 288, 16 and -288, 48, and an ancient city at 224, 176. Seed -9222456014460083338 spawns in a grove, the forested shelf just below the peaks. It has an ocean ruin at -144, -176 and a ruined portal at 288, 48.
Lowland spawns next to the sea
Some matches spawn you on flat ground with the cliffs and the sea nearby. Seed -9223291329577142265 starts on plains with trial chambers at -240, 80, just 67 blocks from spawn, and an ocean ruin at 16, 96. That gives you an early source of trial keys and a coast within about 200 blocks. Seed -9212772944519738015 also spawns on plains and has two ocean signs to the north: an ocean ruin at 176, -256 and a shipwreck at 144, -352. It also has a village at -224, 128 and an ancient city at 224, 48, 222 blocks from spawn, which is a fast route to Swift Sneak books.
Picks for loot-focused builders
Seed -9218473742379455140 spawns in taiga with an ancient city at -144, 0, only 128 blocks out. Ancient cities generate deep underground, usually under high terrain, so you can build your cliff base right above one. Trial chambers sit at 48, 224. Seed -9222437180611347803 starts in savanna, with trial chambers at 128, 0 and an ancient city at -176, -208. Its listed Nether structures include bastions at -96, -80 and 176, 32. Nether coordinates map 1:8 to the Overworld, so a portal near your base reaches them after very little travel.
Building tips for cliff bases
Carry a water bucket while you scout, because falls from coastal cliffs often kill. Open the seed's map first and look for where a mountain biome touches ocean or stony shore. Then fly or climb there in spectator or creative mode to find a ledge before you commit. Cut into the rock instead of building on top of it, which keeps the silhouette natural and gives you free walls. Light the cliff face, since overhangs spawn mobs. Scaffolding and a ladder shaft down to a sea-level dock connect the base to boat travel. Put windows on the ocean side; at sunset that is the best view in the seed.
Frequently asked questions
Which Minecraft versions have cliff coasts like these?
Tall mountains that rise straight from the coast came with the 1.18 terrain overhaul. All the seeds listed here are Java Edition and include trial chambers, which means 1.21 world generation. Older versions use different terrain, so load the seed in a 1.21 world to get matching results.
Do the coordinates point to the cliff itself?
No. The coordinates mark structures such as ocean ruins, shipwrecks and trial chambers. The cliff terrain is spread across the area around spawn. Use the seed's map to find where mountain biomes meet the water, then pick your exact base spot in-game.
Why do fortress and bastion entries appear?
Our scanner also records Nether structures. Fortresses and bastions are in the Nether, and their coordinates are Nether coordinates. Divide Overworld coordinates by 8 to find the matching Nether position when you place a portal near your cliff base.
